LAMBOURN can be a bit lazy – he was tried in blinkers as a juvenile – and he took a bit of shoving along from the stalls, but once in front he found a lovely rhythm under Wayne Lordan, who was winning his first Derby and had nearly pulled off the same tactics in the Oaks 24 hours earlier, with it clear from Tattenham Corner that he was going to take some catching. His dam was a 5f 2yo winner, so it’s safe to say he takes after his sire, Australia, who won this in 2014, and he looks a natural for the Irish Derby now – odds on across the board – on a Curragh circuit that will suit his galloping style, with the St Leger presumably the end-of-season aim. He doesn’t necessarily appeal as the sort to excel against his elders, however.
