CALANDAGAN, who shaped well off a steady pace when runner-up in the Sheema Classic in April, has now found one too good in each of his last four starts and remarkably remains without a Group 1 win to his name. He came there to join the winner inside the last but found that rival, who stays further, pulling out more and he was outstayed. Another big effort at the highest level, he doesn’t lack a turn of foot and would be interesting in a well-run race over 1m2f, though his trainer mentioned that he may well stay at this trip and head to the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
Held up in rear, headway over 3f out, pressed winner over 1f out, joined leader inside final furlong, no extra final strides (op 4/6)

DESERT FLOWER maintained her unbeaten record when making all in the 1,000 Guineas on her return and was bidding to become the fourth filly to do the double this century. By Night Of Thunder, her dam was at her best up to 1m1f and this extra half mile was a question mark. She seemed to stay the trip fine but didn’t look entirely in love with the track, off the bridle before the turn for home, and its credit to her ability that she battled on to finish third. A more galloping track should suit and Charlie Appleby mentioned the Yorkshire Oaks in August as a possibility.
Took keen hold, in touch with leaders, went modest third over 1f out, no match for first two (op 6/5)
